Not so long ago, I had a bit of a run in with a music manager. He insisted that there was no difference in selling music as opposed to selling a sack of potatoes. He was of the opinion that with music – like with everything else - all that matters at the end of the day is what your bank account balance looks like. Aside from the fact that his music really didn’t have much more soul than a sack of potatoes, I thought it was high time to prove him wrong. Soon after, I had an idea for a new music project, and before anyone could even think of what that music would sound like, company politics were clear as day: in this goddamned music business, success can’t be scheduled, and that is why first and foremost, you have to do something that moves your own soul – if this feeling will eventually be shared by ten or ten thousand others, is really irrelevant at that point. Welcome to shareholder tom!
2011. The second Shareholder Tom aka Thomas Berghaus album “Havana - Asmara via Colonia” was released. A step up from the foundation laid by the debut “Emotional Value”. The German press landscape was in agreement: “The warmth you need on cold days. Shareholder Tom endows us, a man from Cologne, who hands the universe to us on a silver platter. We are indebted to him for his work”. So the “Rheinische Post” wrote euphorically. Even the “Süddeutsche” and music magazines such as “Jazz Thing” formally celebrated the album. The single “Send My Tears” was well received and sold particularly well in Japan. The renowned P-Vine label from Tokyo, licensed “Havana - Asmara via Colonia” for the Japanese market. For a few weeks “Send My Tears” was in the Tokyo Hot 100 radio charts and the video clip was on rotation at MTV Japan.
» The crisis in the music industry is nothing new to me. It was no better in the 80’s «
During the past decade the lack of album and single sales has been revisited again and again within the media. “But I think it´s not the only reason why it is so difficult to not be in the black with an album”, says Berghaus. Who has sold music for quite some time on his own label Büro.9. “It´s just incredibly difficult to bring music to the ears and minds of people and it occurred to me that it’s no different to my beginnings in the 80’s. My heroes, during this period, were Chocolate Factory, a Mod band from Hamburg. They were the soundtrack to my first love and my adolescent grief”. The one and only album from Chocolate Factory was called, “45 Minutes out of 3 Years” and appeared in a mini-edition through FAB-Records, a small indie label, owned by a group of Mod, 60’s enthusiasts. Even then it was not about big sales, more about the passion, the music as an element that connects people and brings them together. Now this forgotten album from an 80’s band from Hamburg is the eponym for the third “Shareholder Tom” long player, “45 Minutes out of 25 Years”. The album reflects many things that have influenced Berghaus musically in the last 25 years. “It would be too easy to make yet another 60’s Soul album, a Disco, Reggae, or Afrobeat album, like many in recent years. To really make something timeless, it is necessary for me to draw from a range of music which has accompanied me over the past 25 years; a cross-section of genres and artists that left traces on me” says Berghaus.
» 25 years of the music business in the background, wrapped in eleven tracks. «
The song “World Of The Lonely People” was an influence to Berghaus in his younger years. A cover of the Hamburg based, 60’s Mod band, Chocolate Factory. “For me the song was very important: The first great love, the feeling of being an individual, being something special as the path is not to be mainstream. “I’m Not Like Everybody Else” by The Kings was another one of those big hits that satisfied my needs as a pubescent teenager”, says Berghaus.
Another cover on the album is “My Ever Changing Moods”, which was written by Paul Weller in 1984 for The Style Council. Wellers´ music accompanied Berghaus since the late 70’s where he discovered the punk plates of The Jam in the collection of his big brother. The richly coloured version of “Bossa Nova” with Alison Degbe arose several years ago during a live gig and transferred into a wonderful studio version. Berghaus and Alison also wrote the track “By Your Side”.
“Careful” was written in 2007 in collaboration with New York singer Gary Harrison for Berghaus’ Soul band, Family Vision Care. “The song was first released in 2008, on the influential Unique Records from Düsseldorf. This version with Armenian vocalist Jbid Assadurian is now steeped in Salsa rhythms.
The song, “I’ve Got To Get Away” reflects the music of the Caribbean and South America that has inspired Berghaus in recent years. Music with African roots such as Calypso from Trinidad and the folk music of Colombia, known as Cumbia. The rap is contributed by London based Travis Blaque whose work with Berghaus has grown over the years. Travis is also heard on the first two Shareholder Tom albums.
A major part of Shareholder Tom’s output features Fijori, a singer with roots in Eritrea, who now lives in Munich. This collaboration brings some fine music to the new album with the tracks “Into The Groove”, and “I´ll Never, Ever Let You Go”.
